Hobbies & Games

As a minority group, Eurasians were almost always surrounded by neighbours from varying ethnic groups. Eurasians learnt to enjoy some of the hobbies and traditional games that their neighbours engaged in. Some of the common games that they picked up were card game ‘Chikee’ from the Chinese and ‘Chewing Sireh’ from the Malays and Peranakans.

Other games Eurasians played while growing up included, hopscotch, five stones, pick-up sticks, congkak, capteh and card games such as Happy Family, Snap, Donkey and Old Maid.

Another favourite hobby for Eurasians was gathering for afternoon tea sessions. It was a time for refreshments and relaxation, with tasty snacks, a cup of tea and light engaging conversations. Tea was served in cups with blue floral designs and it was similar to the Portuguese motif used for floor, wall tiles and ceramic crockery.

Many Eurasian women also learnt the art of sewing, crotchet, knitting and tatting. It was a detailed oriented process of creating fabric from yarn, thread or other materials using a hook or needle by pulling loops through other loops. It was a popular hobby amongst Eurasian women and they used crochet, knitting and tatting to make coasters, placemats, bags, purses, hats, sweaters and other clothing items.
